Allgäu and the Beautiful Landscapes of Southern Germany

Allgau is a region of Southern Germany in the southwest of Bavaria, also extending into the neighbouring region of southeastern Badun-Wurttemberg. From the low-lying areas right through to those in an Alpine ascent, this is a beautiful and unique part of Germany. Along with a lot of Southern Germany, this region is a very green and fertile land, complete with rivers, mountain ranges, and forests. While not attracting tourists in big numbers (and that is just how the locals like it), Allgau is an area that inspires and uplifts anyone who visits it.

Allgau is sub-divided into four smaller regions: Oberallgau, Unterallgau, Ostallgau, and Westallgau. Along with the beautiful natural landscapes of these areas, Allgau is also well known for its famous herder cheese, or Hirtenkase. Allgau is mostly part of the much larger German state of Bavaria, which is made up of 70,548 square kilometres and has almost 12.5 million inhabitants. Bavaria is the host to many of Germany’s natural attractions, and a few of its major cities as well. Sharing international borders with both Austria and Switzerland, it is no surprise that the mountains are a big draw card for many of the people who choose to travel to the south of Germany. There are many hotels to choose from in this part of Germany Hotel Allgäu (hotel-sonnenbichl.com) being just one of many.

While there is no disputing the natural richness and beauty of the Bavarian region, it is not the only reason that people come to the south of Germany. Bavaria, including Allgau, is quite culturally distinct from the rest of Germany, and has a number of customs and a lot of cuisine that is very much its own. Bavarians take great pride in their traditional food and drink, and consume many dishes that are unique to their area. Much of the beauty of Bavaria also comes through in its remarkable old buildings, including a number of amazing castles and cathedrals.

Allgau is a remarkable and beautiful area of Germany, as is much of Bavaria. Any talk of Bavaria has to mention the Oktoberfest, of course, held in Munich every year and attracting millions of people for food, drink, and good times. The beautiful landscapes of Southern Germany, combined with the rich culture and the bustling urban centres, make it a great choice for any foreign traveller.
